Though companies in the information technology and defense-related sectors are more likely to receive government contracts to procure goods or perform services, there are numerous opportunities for other businesses as well.
The federal government spends more than $500 billion a year in private sector procurement. Spending by state and local governments pushes that figure even higher.
For example, in Fairfax County where VietAmCham is headquartered, federal government contracts with Fairfax County companies reached $24.3 billion ($16.2 billion in defense agency work, $8.1 billion in civilian agency work) in fiscal year 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Consolidated Federal Funds Report.
Opportunities abound in an array of markets including defense and homeland security; environmental services and products; information technology (IT) and telecom products, services and solutions; laboratory and scientific products and services; law enforcement, fire safety and security; and medical services and products.
VietAmCham offers training programs and assistance to members, as well as faciliates consulting sessions with other experienced members who have successfully won government contracts.
