Thursday, January 07, 2010 By Arron Glantz, New America Media Loans handed out to struggling small businesses as part of President Barack Obama’s stimulus package have largely shut out minority businesses especially those owned by African Americans and Latinos according to data provided by the federal government’s Small Business Administration (SBA) to New America Media (NAM). On June 15, the SBA using money from the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act launch-ed the ARC program, America’s Recovery Capital, giving banks and credit unions 100 percent guarantees so they’re taking no risk when they make loans of up to $35,000 to previously successful, currently struggling small businesses to help them ride out the recession. |

Speaking about VietAmCham's today endorsement, Republican Candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell remarked earlier today: “I am honored to have received the endorsement of this great job-creating organization. Virginia’s Vietnamese American community contributes greatly to our Commonwealth’s quality of life, culture and economy. Vietnamese American business owners know that we need a governor who is committed to keeping taxes low, and regulations and litigation at a minimum. That is exactly the kind of governor I will be. It is why Virginia’s major business organizations have endorsed our positive, forward-looking campaign. Over the next four years we are going to create new jobs and turn our economy around, and I look forward to working with the Vietnamese American National Chamber of Commerce in this effort.” VietAmCham and our members sincerely wish Mr. McDonnell a successful election and look forward to work with his office after November 3rd. We also invite you to visit Mr. McDonnell's campaign web site at www.BobMcDonnell.com. |

In the campaign for Virginia Governor, there is a lot of rhetoric about who can lead Virginia forward. We hear about creating jobs, strengthening our economy, and building partnerships and coalitions with diverse groups of people. But you rarely see the candidate personally engage, especially in the Asian communities, until now. As the Vietnamese American National Chamber of Commerce, we were founded on creating opportunities for and representing the political interests of our members, building strong relationships with other communities, and fostering a friendly environment to grow businesses. In this election, we took a hard look at the outreach efforts that each gubernatorial candidate has made to our community and we looked at the candidates’ policy proposals on the economy, transportation, and taxes. Mr. McDonnell has gone to great lengths to reach out to various new American communities, particularly the Asian American communities. His outreach efforts have been impressive and substantive. We have seen McDonnell campaign materials in Vietnamese and other ethnic languages, he has made several visits to Vietnamese American businesses to listen to their concerns and he has attended many events hosted by the Vietnamese community in Virginia. |
