An a pro-business advocacy organization, VietAmCham recently learned about the water spinach issue in Texas and immediately acted to protect the legitimate interests of our business members - growers, retailers, distributors, restaurants, grocery stores, as well as the Asian American community-at-large. Water spinach is a vitamin-rich, popular dietary item in Asian cuisine. The leaf vegetable is culturally important to Asian Americans and it can be found in almost any Asian restaurants in America. Yet, a species of this leaf vegetable, the true "water spinach" which grows in water, has not been permitted to grow in may states, including Texas, due to environmental concerns over its invasive, aggressive nature. However, the concerned "water spinach" species, farmed on wet soil in green houses, sold on the market, and consumed by Asian Americans in Texas and elsewhere, is a different species that poses little environment concerns. |

Speaking about VietAmCham's today endorsement, Republican Candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell remarked earlier today: “I am honored to have received the endorsement of this great job-creating organization. Virginia’s Vietnamese American community contributes greatly to our Commonwealth’s quality of life, culture and economy. Vietnamese American business owners know that we need a governor who is committed to keeping taxes low, and regulations and litigation at a minimum. That is exactly the kind of governor I will be. It is why Virginia’s major business organizations have endorsed our positive, forward-looking campaign. Over the next four years we are going to create new jobs and turn our economy around, and I look forward to working with the Vietnamese American National Chamber of Commerce in this effort.” VietAmCham and our members sincerely wish Mr. McDonnell a successful election and look forward to work with his office after November 3rd. We also invite you to visit Mr. McDonnell's campaign web site at www.BobMcDonnell.com. |

In the campaign for Virginia Governor, there is a lot of rhetoric about who can lead Virginia forward. We hear about creating jobs, strengthening our economy, and building partnerships and coalitions with diverse groups of people. But you rarely see the candidate personally engage, especially in the Asian communities, until now. As the Vietnamese American National Chamber of Commerce, we were founded on creating opportunities for and representing the political interests of our members, building strong relationships with other communities, and fostering a friendly environment to grow businesses. In this election, we took a hard look at the outreach efforts that each gubernatorial candidate has made to our community and we looked at the candidates’ policy proposals on the economy, transportation, and taxes. Mr. McDonnell has gone to great lengths to reach out to various new American communities, particularly the Asian American communities. His outreach efforts have been impressive and substantive. We have seen McDonnell campaign materials in Vietnamese and other ethnic languages, he has made several visits to Vietnamese American businesses to listen to their concerns and he has attended many events hosted by the Vietnamese community in Virginia. |
